In Partnership with Heritage Open Days, Sheffield Theatres are throwing open the doors of the historical Lyceum Theatre.
Designed by WGR Sprague the theatre on Tudor Square originally opened in 1897.
A traditional proscenium arch theatre, this 1068-seat listed building is Sprague's only surviving design outside London.
Following its closure in 1968, the Lyceum
endured spells as a bingo hall and a rock venue before undergoing a £12 million renovation and reopening as a number one touring venue in 1991.
Terry Watson Sheffield Theatres Facility Manager said:
"This is an exciting opportunity for everyone to come in and see the dramatic architecture of Sprague.
"There will be tours of the Lyceum during the day showing the grandeur of the theatre and an explanation of its history. So many incredible productions have been in this theatre, we want to be able to celebrate this history with the people who have visited us and supported us over the years."
Today the theatre has a diverse programme comprising opera, ballet, contemporary dance and West End hits; currently showing is Sheffield Theatres co production of Horrid Henry – Live and Horrid! Read the review:
