Bar staff may have to undergo accredited training and cocktails with sexually graphic names may be scrapped, under new Government proposals to encourage sensible drinking.
The document, drafted by the Home Office and the Department of Health, notes that the introduction of 24-hour drinking have failed, the Sunday Times revealed.
Britons have not adapted the continental "cafe culture". Instead hospital admissions linked to excess alcohol have more than doubled in the past ten years.
Professor Ian Gilmore, president of the Royal College of Physicians, told the Times that voluntary partnerships with the drinks industry have failed, and "mandatory codes at this stage are essential".
The government's proposed code of conduct for the drinks industry include: health warnings displayed wherever alcoholic drinks are sold; a curb on promotional free alcohol tastings; ban on drinking games and sexually graphic cocktail names. It is also proposed that bar staff must undergo accredited training, and wine in restaurants will have to be served in glasses with measures marked on the side.
