THE challenge – to get from Sheffield to Estonia for less than £15.
The result – a whopping £64,000 in sponsorship, raised by 300 students who took part in 'Bummit to Tallinn'.
The Easter event was part of Sheffield University's rag (raise and give) programme. And students are taking to the road again at the weeke
nd – this time to deliver the money to their chosen charities.
Two teams of three students will make the 450-mile round trip from Sheffield to Cambridge, London and Oxford, calling on all five charities within 24 hours. One team will hitch-hike, Bummit style, and the other will take the train.
Committee chair Nick Stanton said: "Unlike previous Bummits this race up and down the country will not be sponsored. The committee aims simply to raise awareness and promote future feats of goodwill.
"Members of the public should be on the look-out for us on Saturday as we will need all the help we can get. It's not every day you get the chance to aid saving the environment, freeing oppressed people, furthering cancer research or rescuing orphans…"
This year's charities are SOS Children, based in Cambridge; STOP (Trafficking UK) and Sue Ryder Care, both in London; People and Planet in Oxford; and SheffieldVolunteering.
