A medical student from the University of Sheffield is hoping to break a world record in the extreme sport of coasteering and at the same time raise thousands of pounds for charity.
Terence McLoughlin, age 26, is part of a daring duo preparing to complete the longest coasteer - by swimming, jumping and scrambling the 50 mile distance from Lands End to Newquay.

Terence and his friend Adam Nash, who is a paramedic in Northampto
n, hope to raise vital funds for the Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity by completing the four day coastal challenge from June 23 to 27 this year.

Coasteering is an extreme adventure activity that includes short sections of traversing around sea cliffs close to the water as well as short swims and lots of jumps from the cliffs into the sea. Coasteers wear a full body wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet and suitable footwear.

Terence, who is a trained lifeguard, said: "Coasteering is an extremely difficult and dangerous sport and you need a lot of training and support to carry out such a challenge. Both Adam and I have been in the sport years and have the full support from the local Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to undertake this world record attempt.

"Breaking the current world record would be amazing but what really matters to us is raising as much money as possible for the Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity. Having spent time working at the hospital as a medical student I know just what a difference fundraising can make."

The money raised will go towards the charity's £250,000 research appeal, which will help fund vital hospital research in conditions such as brittle bones, asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and newborn screening.

Fran Hunt, fundraiser for Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity, said:

"Terence and Adam are incredibly brave to take on such a daring charity challenge and we are delighted they have chosen to support our research appeal. Coasteering is a very exciting but extreme sport and we wish them lots of luck for the world record attempt."
