The University of Sheffield will launch its autumn concert series on Tuesday October 14, with a performance by British pianist, Angela Brownridge.
Known as one of the world's finest pianists, Angela and has been compared to the legendry composer Serge Rachmaninov and is internationally renowned for her playing.
The concert, which takes place at Firth Hall, will mark the first of twelve even
ing concerts taking place at the University over the next few weeks.
As well as featuring the classic music of Beethoven, Debussy and Chopin, the series will also give local people the chance to listen to a variety of world music.
On Tuesday October 21 the University will host the London Sinfonietta Uganda Project. Members of the Sinfonietta and musicians from the Uganda Dance Academy will be showcasing a programme of traditional Ugandan Music, renowned for its seamless blend of music and song.
The performance will be followed by a short workshop, giving audience members the opportunity to make their own African style music.
The concert series also celebrates the centenary of the birth of one of the 20th Century's most interesting and original composers, Olivier Messiaen.
The first of several centenary concerts takes place on Sunday November 30, where world famous pianist and Messiaen expert Peter Hill will be joined by members of the prestigious Scottish Chamber Orchestra in a performance of 'Quartet for the End of Time.' This hauntingly beautiful work was written during the composer's time in a World War II prisoner of war camp. The concert will include a talk on Messiaen, giving audience members an opportunity to find out more about him and his music.
The concerts will also celebrate the talent of a number of groups from the University's student orchestras and choirs.
As well as the evening concert series, there will be the Free Lunchtime Concerts, which will take place on Thursdays at 1.10pm in the University Drama Studio on Shearwood Road. The next of these concerts will be on Thursday October 16.
All evening concerts will take place at the University's Firth Hall, Western Bank, 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £8, £5 for senior citizens and £2.50 for students or unwaged. Tickets are available on the door, by telephone on 0114 222 0499 or on the website, www.sheffield.ac.uk/concerts.
