Chaplin celebration

Waiting for Video...

A festival celebrating the life and works of one of the most famous movie stars of all time begins in Sheffield today.

The Charlie Chaplin Festival, organised by Sheffield University, will feature film screenings, live music and talks. The opening event tonight is a free open air screening of three Chaplin classics projected on to the side of Weston Park Museum, designed to introduce the comedian to a new generation.

On Saturday and Sunday the Showroom cinema will show the 1931 feature City Lights with the original score performed live by the Sheffield Rep Theatre.

And Kelham Island Museum on Bank Holiday Monday is the setting for Modern Times, the 1936 satire on industrialisation. Talks will look at Chaplin’s life as an actor, director and innovator.
