The 12A film, at an epic two hours and 41 minutes, is co-written, produced and directed by Oscar winning Peter Jackson - the second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, in the books by J.R.R Tolkien, set 60 years before The Lord of the Rings films.

It continues the adventure of An Unexpected Journey, with title character Bilbo (Martin Freeman), wizard Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen) and a company of 13 dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), out to reclaim the lost dwarf kingdom of Erebor from fearsome Smaug the dragon (Benedict Cumberbatch).

They journey through the giant spider-infested Mirkwood, homeland of Legolas (Orlando Bloom).
