The indie rockers will perform it at the FA Cup final on Saturday and it will be an anthem for next year’s campaign.

It follows a season-long battle of the bands style search to find the soundtrack to the world’s oldest domestic football competition.

And the Sheffield band has beaten off competition from five other top shortlisted music acts - The Enemy, Lethal Bizzle, Devlin,The Pigeon Detectives and The Twang.

Winning song Shine The Light is already widely known as the signature tune on football computer game FIFA 13.

Thousands of votes were cast and Teverend And The Makers picked up 34 per cent of the total share, to narrowly edge out Coventry trio The Enemy, who finished second with 32 per cent of the votes.

Front man Jon McClure, or The Reverend as fans know him, said fans had answered their prayers.

“It was voted for by the public. There were a lot of very well known bands who were in contention so we are very lucky to have won really and thankful to all our fans, including The Star and the people of Sheffield who voted for us.

“I think it must have helped us a lot that The Star got behind us because the final result was a close run thing. It came down to a matter of hundreds of people.. So a big thanks to The Star. It probably pushed us over the line. Victory for us and for Sheffield.

“Winning this means so much to us. The teams will be walking out to our songat the Cup final and we will also be playing at half time.

“The song will also be used by the FA during the FA Cup campaign next year.

“It’s on our last album. Maybe we should re-release it. I’m sure there’s lots of people out there who have been subjected to Calvin Harris for a while and they probably want some good music.

“This band was a bit dead in the water for a couple of years -we didn’t do anything between our second and third albums. Then we’ve come back, got top 20 with the album; the tour sold out and it now seems to have a life of it’s own. We’re going on and on.

“It means more to use having the official FA Cup anthem than to be at Number one. It genuinely means that much to us.

The Owls fan said: “For me, the only thing that would be better is if Sheffield Wednesday were to win The FA Cup next season - fingers crossed. Watch this space.”

Debut album The State of Things (2007) spawned UK Top 10 single Heavyweight Champion of the World.

Second album A French Kiss in the Chaos (2009) led to the band being invited to support Oasis on their last ever tour, playing venues including Wembley Stadium.

Third album @Reverend_Makers was released last June and they supported Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on an arena tour.

REVVED UP FOR TURBO SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER

Shine The Light, the winning FA Cup anthem song from Reverend And The Makers, looks set to turbo charge their career - it’s also promoting new family 3D animation film, Turbo.

The Sheffield band’s song is already being used in the trailer, seen by over 2.3 million people online. And it may be in the film itself, about an ordinary garden snail, whose dream to become the fastest in the world comes true.

The film, featuring the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Snoop Dogg and Samuel L Jackson, is by DreamWorks Animation - who made the likes of Shrek, Madagascar and The Croods. It’s due for release by 20th Century Fox in July.

Computer games and a spin-off TV series are also planned.

Reverend And The Makers star Jon McClure said: “Shine The Light is in the trailer for Turbo, which looks like it’s going to be a bit of a box office smash.

“So it’s going to be heard in all the cinemas.

“The song is already being used on the Fifa 13 football computer game. It seems people are into it.”

Shine The Light features on their latest top 20 album, @Reverend_Makers, which is also the band’s Twitter handle.

They are currently recording their fourth studio album in Sheffield.
