Thousands of people are expected to attend a popular Sheffield fun day.

Final preparations are now being put to the annual Beighton Gala, which returns to the village’s Miners’ Welfare recreation ground on Saturday, July 12.

Tracy Higginbottom, one of the gala organisers, said: “We currently have about 80 stalls, although it will probably be closer to 110 on the day. These include more than 30 businesses and more than 50 charities, including the Scouts, Women’s Institute, Beighton environment group and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital charity.

“Attractions set to appear include parrots, birds of prey, a vintage fire engine, steam land train, donkeys and classic cars, as well as the usual fun fair rides.

“There will also be brass band music, dog agility displays and a range of dance displays, including street and belly.”

Tracy, a librarian in Woodhouse, said: “We would also urge anyone with a classic car who would like to show their vehicle, to get in touch.

The event begins with a parade to the showground, led by the Beighton princess, leaving Tynker Avenue at 11.45am, before the gala starts at 1pm.

Beighton Gala has been running for more than 100 years, although the 2012 event had to be cancelled after heavy rain left the venue waterlogged.

Tracy, aged 48, of Manvers Road, Beighton, said about 8,000 visitors were expected to attend this year.

She said: “We are hoping for the weather to hold and be stunning for the day.

“Beighton Gala promises to be a great day out for all the family with hundreds of stalls and attractions for people to enjoy.

“Not many things in life are free, but Beighton Gala is and we hope to see thousands of people in attendance – although we appreciate any donations towards future galas.”
