There certainly is a chill in the air at the Motorpoint Arena.

Outside people are enjoying the last of the summer weather...but the atmosphere inside the Arena is undoubtedly cooler.

That’s because the time has come to lay down the ice in time for the new ice hockey season.

It has taken a team five days to lay the ice in time for the Sheffield Steelers’ new season on September 6.

But the ice is not just part of the 28 ice hockey games and 11 performances of Disney On Ice.

Most concert-goers are unaware that for eight months of the year when they are watching sizzling shows and red hot artists, they are also dancing away on the ice.

A special floor is put in place covering the ice during concerts and events between September and April

After taking the ice out back in April – in a 12-hour job which is like defrosting a freezer but on a grander scale – the time has come to put it back in place.

It takes an entire two days to make 180 square meters of ice followed by a further two to three days to build it up to skating standard.

The process begins by switching on the ice plant which is chilled to minus 10C.

The ice pad is then given a light spray of water to make a thin layer of ice, followed by a fire hose spray which will completely cover the pad in ice.

Then 12 boxes of white paint are sprayed on in three layers to cover the ice.

An umbrella spray of water, described as a fine rain-like layer, is put on to the ice. A second and third layer is then sprayed on, each time getting closer to the ice, which seals it all.

Abigail Congreve, deputy marketing manager at the venue, said: “Now it is time to mark out and paint in the lines for the ice hockey, once complete the same process is used to seal the markings. The sponsor logos are then placed and sealed in which takes almost two days.”

The ice is then flooded to between an inch to an inch and a quarter, before a Zamboni – a piece of machinery used to cut, build and resurface the ice – is used to cut off any surplus ice.

The Steelers 2014/15 season will begin at the Motorpoint Arena on Sunday, September 6, when the team takes on Dundee.
