Bakewell’s controversial custard pie fight finally went ahead on Sunday – and, despite the fears of insurers, the only casualty was male pride.

The Pride and Prejudice-themed event, finale of the first Bakewell Baking Festival, featured five Mr Darcys and their teams of protectors. But winner of the slapstick slinging match was the sole female team, from local hairdressers Air Studio. Prizes were presented by former MP and Strictly Come Dancing star Edwina Currie, who also judged the Best Mr Darcy competition. She was enthusaistic about Bakewell’s new annual attraction: “It’s just brilliant. You have to wonder why nobody thought of the idea before.”
