Rumours of ghosts would attract hundreds of onlookers in Victorian Sheffield.
Author David Clarke got to the bottom of several dramatic ghost stories while researching his new book Scared To Death.
Perhaps the simplest was the George Street spirit which people gazed at for several nights from a safe distance with ‘mouths agape and eyes a-rolling’.
The mystery was investigated by a reporter from The Sheffield Telegraph.
He explained: “One of the onlookers, with no soul for the supernatural, put up his umbrella to shut off the reflection from the Norfolk Street lamp and presto! The ghost was gone.”
