Two of Sheffield’s most highly acclaimed chefs are joining forces to open a new restaurant in Ecclesall Road.
Richard Smith, whose Crosspool-based Artisan closed in January, is going back into the kitchen to work alongside long-time friend and protegée Jack Baker.
Smith & Baker is due to open on the site of Relish later this month, serving classic dishes with the distinctive Smithy touch.
An innovative daily-changing menu will be directed by the seasons and foods that are available, says the Master Chef.
“It’s all about the ingredients and things cooked very simply. Buy today, cook today and sell today…
“Jack and I will have a chat and constantly evolve the menu. I’m only interested in delivering great service and simple good cooking.”
Smith & Baker is the latest in a series of new openings on Ecclesall Road – including the Pointing Dog Clubhouse, Carluccio’s and the Milestone’s reincarnation of Fancie.
But there is no sign of it reaching saturation point, with companies apparently queueing up to try their luck on Sheffield’s answer to Sunset Strip.
The new restaurant is also the latest addition to the BrewKitchen group, run by Smith in partnership with Thornbridge Brewery.
Their first venture on the site at 371-373 was Spice Market Café. That lasted less than a year before giving way to Relish – popular until it was Americanised, then closed in May.
The portfolio also includes Graze Inn, just down the road, and the Beauchief, where Baker will continue to oversee the restaurant alongside his role in the new venture.
