It is 20 years today since Menzels first opened its doors on Ecclesall Road.
The place set a new trend back then and has gone through many changes since. But the ethos remains the same – as does its popularity.
The bar was opened by wine merchant the late Michael Menzel, as an add-on to his shop. It enjoyed success as a wine bar and bistro, but the turning point came when it was sold to businessman Tony Dungworth.
Within months he had bought out his business partners, taking sole charge.
“I’d made up my mind on New Year’s Day 2000, standing at the top of the World Trade Centre, that I was going to change my life and find a better future for my daughter,” he recalls.
“Nothing could really top the evening that I took over as boss. I started this journey with empty pockets and a head full of ideas, it was miraculous that I got that far.”
But it proved a sound decision and Tony went on to launch Sheffield’s cocktail revolution and take the bar to its current place, ranked among the top 50 nationwide.
He will be celebrating tonight with a party featuring live music and DJs and attended by customers and staff from over the years.
