Say cheese! That was the instruction as Sheffield judges lined up for next week’s World Cheese Awards – alongside a cheesemaker from the Our Cow Molly herd at Dungworth.

Paul Widdowson (left), who will shortly be opening his own Sheffield deli, has been a Guild of Fine Food judge for years. Now he has persuaded Nicky Peck of Porter Brook Deli and Reece Lippolis, of the Crookes Urban Pantry, to join him at the judges’ table during the Good Food Show at the NEC. They will work with other experts to judge thousands of cheeses entered by makers all over the world.

Every one is assessed by a panel, which looks for mistakes in appearance, texture or balance of taste, and the best win gold, silver or bronze awards. Each panel then submits one cheese to the supreme judges who pick the overall winners.
