Are you a cook?

I do a lot of weekday cooking.

Any cooking tips?

Grill red pepper, skin, chop and add to tomato sauce for a sweet and smoky note.

What's your favourite dish?

Fish or seafood stew, lovingly and lingeringly prepared.

And a drink to go with it?

A crisp, cold Sancerre.

Your favourite restaurant in the Sheffield area?

Has to be Rafters given that my son Tom is the chef and co-owner! I can recommend the tasting menu for a special Sunday lunch.

And pub?

The Greystones, our local: great beer, good food, great atmosphere, community events and live music!

What's the worst meal you've ever had?

A particularly dismal Italian meal in York that we had to cheer up a disappointing day – it capped it off instead.

And the best?

Lunch at the Fat Duck in Bray with Tom for his 18th birthday. It lasted five hours and was absolute perfection. And Tom got to meet Heston who was his hero.

Your favourite TV cook?

Yotam Ottolenghi: inspiring and energising.

What do you think of Sheffield as a place to eat out?

There's a good variety but my partner and daughter would like more interesting vegetarian offerings. It would also be good to have a Michelin starred restaurant in the city – come on Rafters!
