Food news: Sheffield store creates its own range

Sheffield store Mr Pickles has been selling the finest Yorkshire produce for two years - and now it has its very own range.

Staff have collaborated with Charlie’s Country Garden to create the selection, which includes jars of pickled cabbage, beetroot, chillies and crab apples as well as a Yorkshire salad dressing.

Paul Widdowson, owner of the emporium, said: “I think the pickles are going to be popular over Christmas, especially the crab apples which are amazing when paired with cold meats and cheeses. But it’s our Yorkshire Dressing that I’m particularly proud of as it’s made to my own recipe - one that was inspired by the Irish chef and food writer, Darina Allen. It’s made with apple cider vinegar, watercress, spring onion and a few herbs and spices. It works well with both warm and cold salads, so it’s a great all rounder.”

The spirits of 2017

For those looking ahead to the New Year, Mitchells Wine Merchants at Meadowhead are hosting two special tastings.

A Burn’s Night whiskey tasting experiences takes place on January 25 with an expert from Whyte and Mckay, and gin lovers can rejoice with a special Ungava gin focused event on February 16.

New pub of the season

Sheffield CAMRA has launched a new quarterly award to highlight pubs in the Derbyshire area - the first winner is the Three Stags Heads at Wardlow Mires, a 300-year-old inn with real fires, real ales and a ‘unique character.’
