Some of the nation’s hottest young chefs will be vying for honours in Sheffield as the final of the Young Restaurant Team of the Year 2013 takes to the stage this summer.

And among them will be a team from City College, mentored by lecturer Len Unwin, who will be flying the home flag when the live final gets under way during the Skills for Chefs /Service conference on July 10-11.

Teams – comprising two chefs and a server, all under 21 – rose to the challenge, with entries up on last year’s inaugural event.

The final five were decided by chief judge Andrew Bennett, executive chef at the London Sheraton hotel.

David Mckown, director of the Skills Conferences at Sheffield University, said: “It’s fantastic that this competition is getting the national
recognition it deserves and we are delighted that Sparks Restaurant at City College will host the final once again.”

Each of the five finalists will serve a table of four guests with a reception drink followed by a three-course meal with wine, coffee and ‘an element of theatre’.

Winners will be announced at the gala conference dinner on July 11.

The 2013 conference features a stellar line-up of presenters including Andrew Bennett, two-Michelin-starred chefs Sat Bains and Eric Chavot, and food critic turned Great British Menu judge Matthew Fort.
