Four of Sheffield’s most popular restaurants are joining forces in a bid to put the city on the map – as Curry Capital of Britain.

The national title is awarded each October following a public vote and mystery visits by a panel of judges.

The city council is also asked to submit a report on the importance of the curry sector to the local community – and Lord Mayor Coun Vickie Priestley met representatives of Sheffield’s chosen restaurants this week to discuss the event.

Flying the flag for the city are Cutlers Spice at Gleadless, Butlers Balti in Broad Lane, Viraaj at Woodseats and Ashoka in Ecclesall Road.

A total of 21 cities are competing in this year’s competition, organised as part of the 16th National Curry Week, starting on October 7.

Extra points are given for charity fundraising, but members of the public are urged to vote for their city – with the voting closing tomorrow (Friday).
