Former midwife Marie Boyle is living proof that helping others is good for you…
She set out to host a charity tea party last year – and now has a new business, as well as having raised nearly £1,000 for four different charities.
While planning her tea party, Marie scoured charity shops for vintage crockery and tableware: “It was a huge success and I soon planned another tea party,” she says.
But she had always dreamed of opening a tea shop, so when she found an empty carpet store at The Arches in Chapeltown, she put her plan into action and roped in family and friends to help.
Within two weeks the place was transformed with hand made bunting, pictures, vintage tablecloths and fresh flowers in cut crystal vases. Marie’s Tea Room opened its doors on November 5.
Mum Ann helps by making traditional cakes and pies. They also offer sandwiches, snacks and cream teas.
“It’s all served in my vintage china, but if cups and tea leaves scare our customers, we do offer mugs and Yorkshire teabags too!” says Marie.
Marie’s tea room opens 9.30am-4pm, Tues - Sat, with a crochet club on Wednesdays and a book club and crafting sessions in the pipeline.
