Hospitality trainees at Sheffield College are celebrating this week after chalking up honours in a national showcase event.

The three students were named Young Restaurant Team of the Year after a live final as part of the Skills For Chefs conference, which attracted big names including Sat Bains, Andrew Bennett and Matthew Fort.

Walda Munyaburiza, Jessica Marsden (now working in a local French restaurant) and Sam Baker (who works in a city hotel) were up against four other teams from across the UK. They had to cook and serve a three-course meal in 2hrs 30min.

Their winning menu featured blue cheese salad, tasting of pork and summer berry picnic – with a theatrical flourish: “I created aerated champagne foam and poured it into a milk bottle so that it frothed. It was served with a straw to diners as part of their dessert,” said Walda.

“It was nerve wracking as we had to serve our meal to high profile delegates. It feels unbelievable and amazing to win.”

Their prize, presented at the conference’s gala dinner, included a trophy, chefs’ knives, Champagne and a meal at Sat Bains’ restaurant.
