Two former chefs from the Milestone, Kelham Island, are creating a new landmark, at Vascos restaurant in Wickersley, Rotherham.
Head chef Matt Hodkin (below right) and sous Robert Buchanan have just launched a new menu and are putting their stamp on the place – a former office block, owned by Trevor Dakin and daughter Heidi. “I immediately saw massive potential,” says Matt, who is recreating some of his signature dishes. “Everything is now made in-house and the feedback is very positive.”
Casual dining Tues - Fri from noon, à la carte from 6pm.
The end for Back of House
Contemporary British restaurant Back of House has closed only four months after it opened in Ecclesall Road.
The business – a partnership between bar specialist Tom Robjohns, his partner Jaye Taylor and chef Rich Bucklow – took over the former premises of Kitchen in June. Bucklow, who trained with top chefs Tom Aikens and Mark Hix, has moved on to consultancy work in London. Robjohns and Taylor, who also run the Oakbrook Tea House, were unavailable to comment.
The Angel at Holmesfield is serving up a treat for coeliacs: gluten-free fish and chips. The Angel, well knowfor its gluten-free menu, has announced that it will no longer cook any wheat products in its deep fat fryers – meaning there will no longer be any risk of cross-contamination. The move comes after chef-patron Malcolm Drewery perfected a gluten-free recipe that makes traditional crisp battered haddock without compromise.
Out of the Woods
Visitors to the Woodland Discovery Centre and sawmill in Ecclesall Woods can now complete their visit with tea, coffee and cake following last weekend’s launch of the Woodland Coffee Shop. Jenny Owen and Erica Tingle serve refreshments 10am-4pm, Fri - Sun. If it proves popular they plan to offer a full café service.
