The current cycling boom has put baker Jane Stammers on the road to success – after she created an energy-boosting fruit cake specially for bikers.

Jane, of Tipple Tails, discovered that many cyclists would happily ditch their nutrition bars in favour of a slice of moist fruit cake. So she worked with husband George’s cycling group to develop a recipe bursting with dates, apricots, nuts and vine fruit, infused with Sheffield Honey and Birdhouse tea.

Total Fruit Cake is now available from selected shops and delis, priced at around £2 per slice.

Walkley farmers’ market

New to this year’s Walkley Festival is a mini farmers’ market, taking place at Beeches on Saturday, 10am - 1pm. It will feature local producers Just Preserves, Cocoa Chic and Sheffield Honey.

Celebrity chefs in town

Two top chefs will be in town this week to promote the restaurant chains which bear their names. Marco Pierre White is due at Marco’s, West Bar, today and Antonio Carluccio will visit Carluccio’s, Ecclesall Road, on Tuesday evening. The new restaurant, on the site of the former La Tasca, will offer everything from breakfast, coffee and pastries to a light lunch or a three-course meal.

Toast to sunny Spain

Peppercorn restaurant in Abbeydale Road South is serving up a Spanish treat next Thursday (July 3). Expert John Hattersley will be presenting four of his favourite wines and chef patron Charlie Curran is presenting a four-course meal to match. Price £35 including wines.
