Sheffield’s oldest independent drinks retailer looks set for a vintage year in 2015 as it celebrates its 80th anniversary – and a nomination for national honours.

Meadowhead-based Mitchells Wines not only attains this landmark anniversary in the new year, but has also been shortlisted for the title UK Drinks Retailer of the Year.

The company, run by John Mitchell, has beaten off competition from hundreds of rivals across the country to make the final cut.

The winner will be announced during a gala dinner at London’s Dorchester Hotel in February.

John says: “Few awards are as important in our industry as this one. It’s a real honour to be shortlisted.

“It’s hard to believe Mitchells will be marking its 80th anniversary.

“While other drinks retailers have come and gone, we’ve proved that quality products at the right price keep customers coming back.”

The business has come a long way since it was set up in 1935 by John’s father, Dennis – as a family butchers.

Alcohol was introduced in the 1960s and over the next few years it developed from a ‘beer off’ to a fine wine merchants.

These days Mitchells sells around 900 different wines, more than 500 whiskies, over 100 bottled beers and an expanding range of premium spirits and liqueurs.

And the business continues to develop. It made another step forward this year with the launch of an online store.
