Godfather of swing Ray Gelato back with new album and live shows

GODFATHER of swing Ray Gelato is back with a new album and live shows - with a special appearance next month at Ronnie Scott’s legendary Jazz Club, writes Graham Walker.

It coincides with the release of Hey Boy! Hey Girl!, an album of classic vocal duets with American songstress Kai Hoffman.

He will showcase that this spring with a new touring show in theatres across the UK.

But first comes his return, with his seven piece band The Ray Gelato Giants, at Ronnie Scott’s legendary Jazz club on May 12 and 13.

Gelato, whose influences include Sammy Davis, Dean Martin, Bill Haley, Louis Jordan and Louis Prima, has performed on TV’s Strictly Dance Fever, ITV’s This Morning, TOTP2 , The Terry & Gaby Show and BBC News.

His songs have made many TV and movie appearances including Enigma, Scandal, Inventing The Abbotts, The Perfect Man, Levi’s Dockers commercial, No Reservations and, most recently, his version of If You Were The Only Girl In The World was featured in the US TV series ‘Hung’.

Gelato has also performed live throughout the UK, Europe, USA, Canada and Brazil at prestigious venues, festivals and events such as The Blue Note (NYC), Edinburgh Festival, VE Day celebrations in Trafalgar Square, Proms In The Park, Montreal Jazz Festival, Sir Paul McCartney’s wedding, The Ritz London for HM The Queen and opened for Robbie Williams at The Royal Albert Hall.

He headlined the 1940’s Torch Club at the inaugural Vintage At Goodwood Festival.

With multiple award nominations including BBC Radio 2 Jazz Awards, Jazz Artist Of The Year, Best Of Jazz, BBC Radio 2 Heart Of Jazz Award and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Award for Best UK Small Band, he’s now looking to increase his swing following with a UK tour. Dates to be announced soon.

He has also combined his love of music and food with a cookery book that features his favourite recipes, picked up on his travels.

Cooking With Ray comes with a seven track CD of his music to cook by and the end of 2010 added another string to his bow with the launch of a Cooking With Ray YouTube channel - check it out at youtube.com/user/cookinwithray
