Folk supergroup The Full English are coming home to play in Sheffield, writes Graham Walker.
The award winning band - featuring top folk stars, including the city’s own Fay Hield and Martin Simpson - will perform at the Lyceum Theatre, on Sunday, May 3.
It will be the first time the band has played in Sheffield since winning a string of awards.
The band came about from a project which began life in the city after the English Folk Dance and Song Society decided to create the most comprehensive searchable database of predominately English folk songs, tunes, dances and customs in the world. Mum of two Fay, also a music lecturer at the University of Sheffield, was commissioned by the EFDSS to curate the archives.
She pulled together half a dozen top English folk stars to perform and record some of the songs.
The resulting band is a who’s who of contemporary British folk talent - including Fay, Martin, Seth Lakeman, Nancy Kerr, Sam Sweeney, Ben Nicholls and Rob Harbron.
The Full English won the 2014 Best Group and Best Album Awards at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards at the Royal Albert Hall.
Fay says: “I’m thrilled to be bringing the show back to my stomping ground of Sheffield - there’s such a strong sense of community here, both from the folkies and the strong sense of roots.”
Tickets, on sale Friday, October 3, will be available at Sheffield Theatres, on 0114 249 6000 or www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk.
* Fay, Martin, John Tams, Barry Coope, Chris While, Julie Matthews, Roy Bailey, Ray Hearne, Nat Johnson and other folk stars will take part in The Women Of Steel Folk Concert, towards the £150,000 appeal for a statue to honour the women who kept the munitions factories going during two world wars, at Sheffield Cathedral, on November 26.
A 13-track Women Of Steel album, also featuring Fay, Martin and many others, is available via iTunes and www.womenofsteeltheconcert.co.uk.
