ROCK ‘n’ roll musical Dreamboats and Petticoats is coming to South Yorkshire and we are celebrating with TWENTY tickets to be won, writes digital editor Graham Walker.
The show - a jukebox of popular hits from the 1950s and early 1960s - is at Doncaster Dome, September 10-15.
It’s set in 1961, at the height of the rock ’n’ roll era, inspired by the success of the smash hit multi-million selling albums Dreamboats and Petticoats One, Two, Three, Four and Five.
The show features classic tracks by Roy Orbison, The Shadows, Eddie Cochran, Billy Fury, and many more,
Songs to transport you back include Let’s Dance, To Know Him Is To Love Him, Bobby’s Girl, Shaking All Over, Let It Be Me, Let’s Twist Again, Little Town Flirt, Only Sixteen, Runaround Sue, Happy Birthday Sweet 16, Great Pretender and C’mon Everybody,
The albums sold over two million and spent several weeks at the Number One spot in the compilation charts.
In 1961 emotions run high as young musicians Norman and Bobby compete to win a national song writing competition – and the attention of the gorgeous Sue!
But when Bobby discovers that shy Laura is no slouch on the piano, love and rock ‘n’ roll fame beckons.
The cast includes X factor’s Terry Winstanley, Any Dream Will Do pin-up Ben James-Ellis, David Ribi, Robyn Mellor, Dan O’Brien and Samantha Dorrance.
Brian Berg, executive producer for Universal records says there are plans for productions in the US and Australia. A feature film is in the pipeline. Now you can see it in South Yorkshire.
Michael Hart, chief executive of Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming this smash hit musical to the Dome.
“The Dome has now been put firmly on the map for touring musicals following the success of other hit s such as Annie and Joseph and his Technicolor Dreamcoat shown previously at the Dome. Dreamboats and Petticoats is an exceptional musical to continue the Dome’s success.”
Written by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, it was first performed at The Churchill Theatre in Bromley, in February 2009, followed by a UK tour.
The run received rave reviews and widespread acclaim. It moved to the Savoy Theatre in London’s West End and has since returned to London at the Playhouse Theatre, where it closed earlier this month.
A second national tour followed and well over a million people are reported to have seen the show to date.
