1. Open Air Cinema

The Moor shopping precinct, Sheffield, today

Bring your deckchairs as open-air cinema comes to The Moor every Saturday in August. Enjoy two of the year’s biggest fantastic family blockbusters with Lego Movie and Rio 2 on offer. The screen will be halfway down The Moor, close to where the new shopping and leisure complex is being built. Times for Saturday, August 9: 11.30am – Lego Movie and 2.30pm – Rio 2. Free to attend, just turn up and enjoy.

2. Live entertainment in Leopold Square

Leopold Square, Sheffield, today and tomorrow, 2pm-4.30pm

Leopold Square present a line-up of dance inducing live music every Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer. Today is the turn of Leeds’ funkiest soul man, The Reverend Chunky Butt Funky, who will be bringing a band of New Mastersound regulars to the Square to get you grooving. Tomorrow welcomes the UK’s best female-fronted 1950s band, Carmen Ghia & The Hot Rods to the square, presenting their fiery R & B, jive, swing and rockabilly. Free to attend.

3. Sheffield by the Seaside

Sheffield City Centre, running until Thursday, August 28, 10am-6pm

If you’re not having a holiday this summer (or even if you are!) come down to a fantastic day out to the beach right on your doorstep. The Peace Gardens and Fargate will be packed full of fun things for all the family, including bumper cars, ice cream, fun fair rides, live entertainment and a real beach. 4. Sheffield Sky Ride

Starting from Devonshire Green, Sheffield, tomorrow, 11am-3pm

Up to 10,000 people are set to pedal through Sheffield in the city’s first Sky Ride. Cyclists of all ages will take part in the free event, stretching from Devonshire Green to Endcliffe Park, then to Bramall Lane and back to the city centre. The family ride is one of 15 major cycling events taking place across the country to ensure a Tour legacy. Cyclists will be able to ride in a traffic-free environment and will also include extreme challenges, music and entertainment at various stops along the route. Come and join us on this bike ride and pass some of the city’s iconic sights. Free to take part – just bring a bike. Tel: 0114 2736681

5. Summer Fun at Cannon Hall Farm

Cannon Hall Farm, Barnsley, running until Sunday, August 31, 10.30am-5pm

A great day out for all the family with something for everyone and throughout the summer holidays there are even more reasons to visit with sheep and ferret racing, cow milking demos, birds of prey displays, tractor rides and much more. 6. Medieval Mayhem

Tropical Butterfly House, Sheffield, Saturday July 19 – Sunday, August 31

Try your hand at archery, learn the traditions of falconry in daily free-flying bird demonstrations and take part in medieval-themed crafts, games and activities, suitable for all ages. 7. War Work: Sheffield Industry & The First World War

Kelham Island Museum, running until 30 July 2015

A new exhibition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War. War Work tells the story of the impact of war upon the companies, manufacturing and workers of Sheffield through objects and documents from our collection. Adult admission £5, concessions £4 and accompanied children (U16) go free. Monday to Thursday 10am-4pm, Sunday 11am to 4.45pm. Closed Friday and Saturday.

Sheffield Walking Tours
