But tickets are already on sale and auditions have begun for the parts of Oliver, the Artful Dodger and other child roles - including orphans and Fagin’s gang.

At the front of the queue for auditions was seven-year-old Gemma Roebuck, of Hillsborough, who told The Star: “We’ve been watching the film. It’s great. I’ve love to be in the show.”

Proud mum Sarah added: “It would be fantastic if she got a part. We’re all excited that she’s even got an audition.”

Children had to register and director Evans led six workshops. Those children lucky enough to get through will be called back for final auditions this weekend.

Sheffield Theatres spokeswoman Emily Clarke said: “We had a fantastic response from children wanting to take part. It’s a great opportunity for them - I suppose yes, it could be the start of a journey leading to them becoming West End stars.

“We’ve not cast the main roles yet but tickets are already on sale for Oliver!

“And if anyone wants to guarantee their seat they should book now. My Fair Lady, our last big show over Christmas, was a sell-out.”

Based on the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, Oliver! is the story of an orphan who runs away from a workhouse and falls in with a gang of boys trained to be pickpockets by gang leader, Fagin.

Hit songs include Food Glorious Food, I’d Do Anything, As Long As He Needs Me, You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two, and Oom-Pah-Pah.
