Once it was a mainstay of yuletide viewing on the box, but in recent years people have enjoyed experiencing It’s a Wonderful Life on the big screen, especially since it has been digitally restored.

It has certainly become an evergreen in the Showroom December programme with many repeat bookings every year. There’s also a one-off screening at Cineworld next Thursday, December 19.

In Frank Capra’s timeless life-affirming 1946 classic. James Stewart stars as George Bailey, a family man who has given up his dreams in order to help others and finds himself on the brink of bankcruptcy. As he contemplates – suicide on Christmas Eve his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody (Henry Travers) is sent to earth.

Clarence shows George the people he has touched and how different life in his community of Bedford Falls would have been had he not been around.

Lionel Barrymore plays the nasty businessman who gets his comeuppance.
