Action scenes for a star-studded feature film were shot in a Sheffield suburb after roads in the area were closed for the day.
A fatal car crash was staged at the junction of High Storrs Drive and Edale Road in Greystones for X Plus Y, starring Rafe Spall, star of TV series Pete Versus Life and movie I Give it a Year.
Fake traffic lights were set up by Sheffield Council contractors Amey and road markings were painted by crew for the scene in which a Transit van slammed into a car.
The vehicle was moved to High Storrs School where it was filmed on a spinning platform called a ‘gimbal’.
Producers said the ‘accident’, in which the car rolls several times, will be created digitally.
In a letter to neighbours, they asked residents to keep cars off roads near the junction yesterday.
X Plus Y is about Nathan, a Sheffield maths prodigy, who loses his dad in the crash when he is aged nine.
He is mentored by his maths teacher, played by Spall – son of legendary British actor and Harry Potter star Timothy Spall – in scenes which have already been shot at High Storrs School.
Nathan – played by Asa Butterfield, star of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas – is eventually selected for the British team for the International Mathematical Olympiad.
The film is directed by Morgan Matthews and is based on his Bafta-nominated documentary Beautiful Young Minds, about the UK maths team competing at the Olympiad.
Rob Jones, location manager, said: “We’ve already filmed scenes at the school. They’ve been very helpful.
“After much consultation and because of its cared-for appearance – tying in with Nathan’s stable home life – the junction of Edale Road and High Storrs Drive was chosen as a location.
“We have employed an expert team of stunt co-ordinators, health and safety advisors and officials to make sure our activities remain safe and controlled.
“Our activities are endorsed by the council, South Yorkshire Police and the Highways Agency and emergency services have been notified.”
Filming in Sheffield is set to end on Tuesday and move to Cambridge.
