Like a baddie in a cartoon, Sheffield Wednesday’s dastardly plan of stealing three points from the Memorial Stadium was going so well. And then once again, as in episodes before, they stepped on a rake and took a painful blow to the face.

But this time, unlike in those grainy editions of Tom and Jerry or Scooby Doo, the blue and white baddies recovered from their error to take the swag and made their getaway north.

The first half was an even one, Bristol Rovers having the better of the opening exchanges without creating too much of a headache for Cameron Dawson and his defensive posse. Wednesday went 2-0 up and the feeling was that the Owls of old were shining through.

That was until the half-time break, a stutter and a dither and a moment that was the Owls of new - and a central theme of their more recent struggles. It was one of the defensive lapses Darren Moore and Wednesday supporters has bemoaned so much. 2-1.

But where a sense of panic has previously crept in into a month-long malaise, Wednesday were somehow more unified, more together and weathered the storm. It is the response to that error that showed a way through the concern around a defence that earlier this season set a club record for clean sheets.

The last 15 minutes or so saw a rearguard effort of strained headers and stretching clearances - and Wednesday deservedly claimed their prize.

“It was just concentration,” said Moore post-match on the goal, which Dominic Iorfa was pinned with much of the blame. “I can’t say anything more than that really. I’d barely got into my technical area and a goal had gone in.

“What I liked was that the boys re-set, regained composure and when you look at it, the players didn’t wilt at all. When the lost Akin we had to make all those changes and I had no probem with those changes because the boys have done it all before.”

The Owls boss also praised the overall performance of Iorfa, who either side of his error was strong in his defence and made more tackles than anyone else on the pitch.

Moore said: “I thought Dom was excellent with his work across the floor, aerially and his positional sense.

“He was in total control of the situation. It was one little lapse but apart from that I thought he was sensational tonight.

“Even after that (error) the way the group stuck together - they didn’t wilt in a tought situation and I thought they handled it very, very well. We spoke about being resolute and tough and we saw that tonight. I’m pleased it was a solid performance.”
