Green Sheffield school wins national gold award for environmental work

After three years of hard work, pupils at a primary school in the city have been recognised nationally for their dedication to protecting the environment.

The children at Oasis Academy Fir Vale have won the Modeshift STARS Gold Award for their work to raise awareness about sustainable travel, and making changes to their daily travel to and from school.

Modeshift STARS is the national schools awards scheme that recognises schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel.

The scheme encourages schools across the country to join in a major effort to increase levels of sustainable and active travel in order to improve the health and well-being of children and young people.

Oasis Academy Fir Vale’s award follows their silver accreditation last year, and bronze in 2017.

Senior learning mentor Rashad Hassan said: “This award is result of three years of hard work by the whole school; staff, parents and children. We have enjoyed and benefited from thinking carefully about how we get to school, the impact it has on the environment, and how we might change our habits to limit our carbon footprints.

“Our children are so engaged with the challenge of global warming, and what small steps they can take to improve things like air quality locally. We hope that this award will be the launch pad for our pupils’ next ideas.”

Principal of Oasis Academy Fir Vale, Helen Round, commented on the award “We are proud to receive the Modeshift STARs Gold Award, which is thanks to the dedication of our pupils and Mr Hassan.

“This work is part of our wider commitment at Oasis Academy Fir Vale to provide our young people with the opportunities to consider their place in the world, how they can be model citizens, and how they can make a positive contribution.”

Oasis Academy Fir Vale is an inclusive primary school in the Fir Vale area of Sheffield, for children aged three to eleven. The school is committed to delivering first class-education and playing an active role in the local community.
