Some areas of England have administered large numbers of full Covid vaccines (two doses), while others have only given one jab, according to new figures.

Recent NHS England data by the Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) shows that some parts of the country have fully vaccinated over 20 per cent of their over-80s population, but in some areas the figure is as low as 0.1 per cent.

Northamptonshire has vaccinated 22.8 per cent of its population aged over 80 (7,469 people) with a second Covid vaccination dose, with 87.2 per cent overall having received their first jab so far.

Following closely behind this is Birmingham and Solihull, with 18.7 per cent of over-80s already fully vaccinated with their second coronavirus vaccine.

Hertfordshire and West Essex have also vaccinated 18.3 per cent of over-80s with two doses, while North London reports 17.7 per cent and Hampshire and the Isle of Wight 16.3 per cent.

However, this is not the case across the country, as some areas have only vaccinated a very small number of over-80s with a second Covid dose.

Some parts of England only vaccinated a small number of over-80s with second jab.

Nottingham has only vaccinated 0.1 per cent of its over-80s population with a second Covid dose, which equates to 29 people.

Herefordshire and Worcestershire have also only vaccinated a small percentage of people with a second dose, reporting 1.8 per cent of over 80s vaccinated with their second jab to date.

Elsewhere, Norfolk and Waveney have vaccinated just 2.4 per of over 80s with a second dose, Cheshire and Merseyside 3.4 per cent and Gloucestershire 3.6 per cent.

Why is this the case?

Currently, there is no clear reason as to why some areas have vaccinated more of their over-80s with a second dose.

Northamptonshire, which is top of the list for areas that have fully vaccinated over-80s with a second jab, ranks third overall in terms of how many single doses it has administered to over-80s, at 87.2 per cent.

However, although the region is making quick progress in its vaccination rollout, which could be one of the reasons why it has begun to administer the second dose, this isn’t the same pattern for other areas of the country.

Herefordshire and Worcestershire has administered the second highest amount of first doses of the vaccine to the over-80s so far (89.4 per cent) but is second from bottom when it comes to administering the second dose, which stands at 1.8 per cent.

Currently, those who have received one of the approved vaccinations are required to wait up to 12 weeks until they can receive their second dos

This is due to a Government decision made at the end of December, to push back the time period of when people will be administered their second jab, in order to allow more people to receive their first dose of a Covid vaccine.

The Pfizer vaccine first began being administered in the UK on 8 December 2020, with the first dose of the AstraZeneca given on 4 January 2021.

The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) also approved the Moderna vaccine for use on 8 January 2021, but this vaccine has not yet been administered in the country as doses are not expected to arrive until spring.
