Students from as far afield as Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia took part in an international effort to raise as much as possible for The Children’s Hospital Charity.

Society president James Smith said: “This time of year would normally be our summer holiday and things would be quiet but we decided this year with everything going on we needed to support the local community with our charity work, especially given the sharp decline in funds as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

“It would have been easy to look inwards but we have all seen the incredible work by the NHS to keep us and our families safe during the pandemic.

"While the money raised supports the young patients and staff at Sheffield Children’s, it is also a small token of our gratitude to everyone at the hospital who have put others before themselves.”

The events have included a 24-hour charity race with the Manchester Dental Students Society. The challenge, to travel the furthest collective distance, saw students cycling, running, walking and even roller skating. Sheffield narrowly emerged victorious, amassing 581km, the equivalent of travelling from Sheffield to Paris.

A virtual bake-off and cooking demonstration have also raised much-needed funds, while a virtual pub quiz rounded off the fundraising. Having set an initial target of £300, around 50 people have now contributed to raising £900 for The Children’s Hospital Charity.

James said: “The Children’s Hospital Charity does such vital and amazing work in the city we are proud to call home. Sheffield Children’s is a short distance away from the dental school and it gives us great pride that we are supporting such a worthy cause.

“I am also one of the Scout leaders at Sheffield Children’s Hospital so from a personal point of view I have seen the sheer joy the charity’s work brings to children by improving the environment and making it such a friendly and welcoming place to be.”

The money raised will support The Children’s Hospital Charity’s appeal to build a new emergency department, helipad and cancer and leukemia ward.
