June 24, 1972: Last-minute touches to the children’s well dressing at Litton

Some adult help was necessary to fit the electric lighting for the well made by the children of Litton in 1972. And the Derbyshire village is preparing once again for its annual Wakes Week with the children helping with designing and making the children’s well situated next to the school. From Monday to Wednesday visitors can view the wells and enjoy cups of tea, sandwiches and homemade cakes. Pupils will be dressing up in Victorian costume and perform Maypole dancing at 11am, 1.30pm and 2.30pm each day..

There’s Wakes Week too in neighbouring Tideswell. On Friday the Clypping of the Parish Church takes place when school children hold hands, forming a circle around the building, symbolising the embracing of the church ahead of the wells blessing on Saturday..
