Beanies Wholefoods, which is currently open on Crookes Valley Road, will move to a larger building on Barber Road later this year. A cafe will also open on nearby Crookesmoor Road.

Rachael Eyton, shop co-directors, said: "After over 30 years in the same building we have an exciting opportunity to relocate to a larger property and develop our business into what we’ve always dreamed it can be.

"About this time last year we saw that the old doctor’s surgery across the road was available and went to have a look around.

"It took a big leap of imagination, but between that and the empty pharmacy building next door we realised we were standing in the future home of Beanies.

"The opportunity to move and expand the business, yet stay in the same area and retain our customer base and excellent footfall, was too good an opportunity to miss.

"It’s the first time we’ve opened café so we’re very excited but slightly nervous. We’d like to create a meeting point for the local community and provide customers with somewhere to go before or after their shopping."

Planning permission for the shop has been agreed and construction work on the new premises is now underway.

Rachael added: "The building we’re moving into was previously used as a doctor's surgery and dentist so, as you can imagin, it needs a lot of work doing to transform it into a retail space.

"We have already started knocking out walls, putting in new steelwork, windows, and even a brand new entrance way and ramp.

"The café building was previously the pharmacy so we are essentially building a café from scratch in what is currently an empty shell."

It is hoped that the new cafe will be open in September or October, with the shop opening in November.

Beanies, a greengrocers and a worker’s co-operative, has been selling fresh produce to customers since 1986.

The shop sells organic and non-organic fruit and vegetables, wholefoods, fresh bread, chilled and frozen produce, snacks and drinks, and continental and speciality foods including gluten-free and dairy-free. All of the products on offer are vegetarian or vegan.
