Sheffield’s feast of folk

TWO Sheffield musicians have underlined the city’s reputation as a hotbed for folk music with a string of nominations in the annual BBC awards.

Acoustic guitarist Martin Simpson, who lives at High Storrs, who is in three categories of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

His latest album, Purpose + Grace, has been nominated for best album, one of the tracks, Lakes Of Ponchartrain, for best traditional song, and Martin himself is nominated for Musician Of The Year.

Regarded as one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world, he has already been nominated 23 times in 11 years for the BBC prizes – more than any other performer – and has twice been Musician of The Year.

Singer and fiddle player Jon Boden, who lives near Dungworth, is in the running for Folk Singer Of The Year. With John Spiers, he has been nominated for best duo, while 11-piece Bellowhead, which he fronts, is again competing for the best group and the best live act.
