Homemade - the name says so much and as soon as you walk through the door the atmosphere has a very similar message.

This Nether Edge deli cafe manages to achieve a feeling that you are truly welcome - a wonderful blend of cosy, friendly and relaxing.

The business has recently swapped hands and is now run by sisters May and Emily Rowley.

You can’t help but want small, family-owned Sheffield businesses to thrive ... and it seems very likely that this one will.

There are huge bowls of salad in a display fridge which immediately set the standard for fresh, carefully prepared food including some unusually delicious combinations.

The options available when we popped by were chickpea and spiced butternut squash; fig, stilton and mixed leaves with honey and mustard; Italian bean with tomato, olive and pesto; carrot, apple and raisin; and new potatoes with broad beans, lemon and garlic.

We tried a sandwich with chicken, tomato, sweet chilli sauce and rocket, plus a couple of the salads, and it was really good.

Our favourite of the day though was a wrap stuffed full of butternut squash pakoras, grated carrots, green leaves and dressing.

Not something I would have thought to make at home, but an irresistible mix that hit the spot.

There are lots of the vegetarian and vegan dishes available each day and everything has a healthy feel to it - until you try their awesome hot chocolate with all the toppings.

The cakes are also marvellous - truly representing the deli’s name.

Just one look at them sitting on the sideboard makes your mouth water.

Some of the stranger ingredients might not immediately strike you as being ideal for cake - orange and lavender polenta (£2.50 or butternut squash cake (£2.50) - but trust the chefs, the cakes we tried were delicious. If they have a sprinkling of goodness in there too, all the better.

Homemade changes what is available on the menu and pondering what other combos they might come up with will make sure we return soon. They also do Sunday brunches.
