48 jobs as online bookie bets on Sheffield

Almost 50 jobs are up for grabs at online bookmaker Sky Betting and Gaming in Sheffield.

The firm, based in the Electric Works in the city centre, will advertise 48 hi-tech jobs over the next month including software engineers, app developers and testers.

The company employs 70 in Sheffield and a total of 850 including at its headquarters in Leeds and offices in London and Rome.

It operates five brands, all of them online, including betting - mainly on horses and football - poker, bingo, slot machines and a casino.

Andy Burton, chief technology officer, said: “Since opening our office in Sheffield last summer we’ve quickly established a fantastic team in Sheffield.

“With a strong digital sector and high quality universities it’s a great city to scale a technology business in.”

Sky Betting and Gaming became an independent company in 2015 following the sale by parent company Sky of 80 per cent of the firm to private equity company CVC Capital Partners.

The deal valued the enterprise at £800m and included permission to continue to use the Sky brand.

In November SB&G announced a £5m investment into the creation of 100 jobs in Sheffield.

It has also joined Sheffield Digital, a membership organisation set up to help the sector thrive, as a founder member with The University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, Tech North, and Lightwork Design.
