Artist Alison Zwaard has always loved perfume: her mum worked for Estée Lauder and one of Alison’s first jobs was on the cosmetics counter at Harvey Nichols.
Now she has discovered the art of perfumery for herself – and is sharing the secret with others.
The daughter of a ship’s captain, Alison was born in Liverpool, grew up in South Africa and spent four years travelling before returning to the UK. Penniless, she took a job at Harvey Nichols in London.
Two decades later, Alison is making silver jewellery and decorative glass and running workshops from a studio at her family home in Steade Road, Nether Edge.
Having created her own fragrances, Alison decided it would make the perfect complement to her workshops – and the first one takes place on Sunday.
“I’ve always loved fragrance and been fascinated by how it can lift your mood and revive memories,” she says.
She found a supplier used by some of the top perfume houses and sourced bottles in which to keep her blends of more than 60 different oils.
During the four-hour course, groups will learn about the history of perfume and how to mix oils and carriers. It includes afternoon tea, a glass of bubbly and each member will go home with three personalised scents.
