Another retailer sets its sights on former Sheffield pub

Proposals were approved in March 2015 to turn the old Sportsman Inn, on Oldfield Road, Stannington, into a Tesco – but, despite some work taking place at the site, the scheme was dropped when the retailer cancelled its convenience store development programme.

Now the Co-operative Group has taken over the site with the intention of opening a new branch.

In documents submitted to Sheffield Council, agents Edgeplan, on behalf of the Co-op, said the new works proposed were ‘broadly similar’ to those previously approved.

However, there are some differences within the change of use application.

Customers will arrive and leave via an entrance point from Oldfield Road, with access from Stannington Road removed, while the number of car parking spaces has been increased by one to 15 by making alterations to the layout.

Opening hours would be 7am to 11pm, seven days a week.

“The nature and scale of the proposed convenience store is the same as that which was previously approved,” said Edgeplan.

The Sportsman closed permanently in 2014 after a downturn in trade.

Tesco announced its intentions for the site shortly afterwards.
