£7m Ecclesall Road shops plan

The old Peugeot garage next to Waitrose has been renamed ‘Ecclesall Junction’ by Manchester-based owners Nikal.

The firm has just lodged a planning application to convert the site, which has stood empty for more than four years.

New signs went up in front of the building this week.

Nick Payne, of Nikal, said it was set to include an outdoor clothing shop, gym, deli, cafe and restaurant.

It would be aimed at Waitrose customers, he added.

The company has had discussions with the supermarket in developing its plans, he confirmed.

He added: “Waitrose is a key occupier next door and an upmarket brand, we want the same level of customer base.

“It would also complement the residential developments on the other side.

“We hope to be up and running by the end of the year.”

Mr Payne said they had already been speaking to three potential tenants.

A £2m refurbishment of the old car showroom was planned.

Total project costs would be about £7m and the scheme could create more than 50 jobs, he added.

Mr Payne said his last project in Sheffield was Leopold Square, when he worked for another company. He set up Nikal in 2003.

He added: “Sheffield is a vibrant city. It’s nice to be back and investing, we are trying to do something positive, we’re keen to do more.”

Sales across Waitrose stores are up 3.3 per cent on last year.
