Barnsley: Reds have '˜the winning attitude' says Winkler

Barnsley will be aiming to extend their unbeaten start in League One against Walsall and assistant boss Andreas Winkler says they will be helped by a 'winning attitude'.

The Reds have won four and drawn two of their opening six games as they lay the foundations of a potential promotion challenge.

It has been a dream beginning for Daniel Stendel following his arrival earlier this summer and if his side can avoid defeat against the Saddlers he will join Lee Johnson in posting the most successful league start as a Barnsley manager.

Winkler says that the Reds are driven by their desire to remain unbeaten.

He said: 'That is a great motivator, I like to win, everybody likes to win, a draw is sometimes really good but the best is we didn't lose, that feels good.

'I am very delighted to be unbeaten in six matches because before the season started everyone was talking about high-press and counter pressing and now we can show that this style of football is also good for the defence.

'There's a good attitude, a winning attitude now.'

That unbeaten run will come under the biggest threat yet as Walsall travel to Oakwell with an identical record.

The hosts will also be without goalkeeper Adam Davies, who is on international duty with Wales.

Jack Walton, who played in the midweek Checkatrade Trophy clash at Oldham, will keep the gloves and he is hoping to make use of his chance.

He said: 'I am happy for Davo to get a call up for Wales, it is a big honour to get called up by your country. But it is a good opportunity for me now and I am looking forward to.

'It is much better to be in a positive environment. Confidence is high and we are unbeaten and will go into the game trying to keep that unbeaten record and get three points.'

Defender Dimitri Cavare missed out on winning the League One Player of the Month for August, with Peterborough's Jason Cummings claiming the gong.

Stendel was not nominated for the managerial award, despite his fine start, with Posh boss Steve Evans getting the win.
