Barnsley stalwarts to get freedom of the borough

Four prominent Barnsley figures are set to be granted honorary Freedom of the Borough titles for their services to the borough.

Journalist, playwright, broadcaster and poet in residence at Barnsley Football Club, Ian McMillan is among those chosen for the title as is Mercury Music Prize nominated singer-songwriter Kate Rusby.

Known as the Barnsley Nightingale, Kate has also performed at numerous fundraising concerts across the borough.

Leading Egyptologist, Joann Fletcher has been awarded the title for her outstanding work with Barnsley Museums. Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, David Moody completes the quartet of those recognised.

The titles will be officially awarded at a Barnsley Council meeting on June 7.
