A young girl’s birthday party at a Sheffield bowling alley was ruined after a mix-up meant the youngsters had to eat outside in pouring rain.

Caitlin Wood was enjoying her eighth birthday party with 13 friends at MFA Bowling, on Sicey Avenue, Firth Park.

But despite staff earlier agreeing the party could eat fish and chips in an upstairs function room they had booked, they were told they couldn’t – just minutes before they collected the food.

Caitlin and her friends had to eat their food in the pouring rain outside the nearby fish and chip shop.

Stepdad Martin Cuthbert said, aged 33, of Bellhouse Road, Firth Park, said: “We wanted to get fish and chips from around the corner from the bowling alley.

“I rang the bowling alley to see if we could have their function room upstairs because we couldn’t predict the weather.

“I told them we would be bringing in fish and chips and they told me that wouldn’t be a problem.”

Martin said the party were nearing the end of the bowling and preparing to collect their food when the manager came over and said they would not be able to eat it inside the bowling alley

He added: “He said we couldn’t eat upstairs. He said it wasn’t a function or anything like that and it was a bad call on the lady’s part who I had originally spoken to.

“I asked what we were meant to do because I’d ordered the food.

“We ended up eating it outside the fish and chip shop. There was no seats so we were stood eating and then it decided it was going to throw it down with rain.

“The party was cut short. We didn’t event get to sing happy birthday.”

Bob Walker, manager of MFA Bowling, said it was company policy that customers cannot consume their own food in the bowling alley and there are signs up informing people of the rule.

He added: “We have a dining outlet and birthday party packages, so the gentleman had lots of alternatives.”
