Herol’s old coach Brendan Ingle is the latest to add his voice to the well wishers. He said everyone at Ingle Gym wished the former middleweight a speedy recovery.

Sources close to Herol say he suffered complications following a burst appendix about a fortnight ago.

Yesterday former world heavyweight champion Frank Bruno visited Herol in hospital in London alongside footballer-turned-boxer Leon McKenzie, who played in the Premier League for Norwich City.

Hundreds of people have posted messages for Herol on The Star’s Facebook page.

Herol, who moved to Sheffield to train in his teens, is widely considered one of the best boxers never to win a world title during his career.
