Burngreave community heores recognised

Volunteers, community groups and local workers from Burngreave were celebrated at a special Town Hall event.

More than 43 volunteers and community groups in Burngreave were celebrated for their contribution to the area.

Volunteer Graham Jones won an award for his dedicated work at community newspaper Burngreave Messenger and at Parkwood Springs, a natural, wild space.

He said: “I felt very proud to live in Burngreave with so many people committed to improving our community and environment. There was a real buzz on the evening and a lovely, friendly atmosphere that reflected all that is best in Burngreave.

“I was so enthralled by the real accomplishments of a whole range of local people – such an array of creativity, determination and good old fashioned kindness.”

The 76th Sheffield St Peter’s Ellesmere Scout Group also received an award for their work to help young people from Burngreave, whatever their background, to take part in outdoor activities such as camping, climbing, night hikes and international trips.

The Friends of Burngreave Library group were also honoured alongside a group of children from the Pitsmoor Adventure Playground who have carried out litter picks.

Patrick Meleady, playground manager, said: “This event celebrated all that is good about Burngreave and I was particularly delighted to see representation from all ages and a diverse range of groups, all celebrating their contributions to improving our fabulous area. My colleagues and I left Sheffield Town Hall feeling valued and uplifted and our children were overwhelmed with the thanks they received.”
