Yorkshire Water said the burst pipe, at the junction of Rossington Road and Brocco Bank, was discovered at 3.30am.

Hunters Bar Infant and Junior Schools both had to close due to the lack of water.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area while repairs are carried out.

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said: “A burst to a water pipe located on the Brocco Bank junction with Rossington Road occurred at around 3.30am this morning.

“Our technicians have now located the burst and water supplies have been restored to residents.

“We would like to apologise for an inconvenience caused and advise motorists to avoid the area if possible as road works and repairs are ongoing.

“We hope to fully re-open the road as soon as possible.”
