£10m bid for better Don flood defences

Sheffield is asking the Government for an extra £10m to help improve flood defences in the east end.

Council and business leaders and businesses are looking for additional funds from the Environment Agency to further strengthen defences along the River Don between the city centre and M1 to guard against the effects of climate change.

The Government has already allocated £8.1m - and local businesses have voted to contribute £1.4m.

Council cabinet member Jack Scott said: “If we successfully secure additional funding it will allow the level of flood defences to be raised and extended further to provide a greater level of protection to businesses based on current flooding projections.”
